Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Tom was admitted to the Newfoundland bar in 1968, having completed his education at St. Dunstan’s University (B. Comm., 1963) and Dalhousie University (LL.B. 1967). He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1980 and Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1988.

Tom served as Chairman of Marystown Shipyard Limited from 1984-1997 and a Director of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital from 1988 to 1994, as well as Chairman of its ethics committee from 1988-1996. Tom is a Member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (Treasurer, 1983-1984, and Bencher), the Canadian Bar Association (Newfoundland and Labrador President, 1975-1976) and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
