Hon. Stephen McNeil Joins Cox & Palmer

June 10, 2021

Cox & Palmer is pleased to announce the appointment of the Hon. Stephen McNeil as the firm’s Strategic Business Advisor in the Halifax office.

Until his resignation this past Spring 2021, McNeil was the dean of Canadian premiers, having held the office since 2013. In total, he served for 18 years in the Nova Scotia Legislature and was re-elected five times by the voters of Annapolis.

Dan Ingersoll, Cox & Palmer’s Halifax Managing Partner said: “Stephen McNeil’s global contacts and his experience will be of great value to our teams at Cox & Palmer. Our objective is always to better serve our clients. Stephen’s national and international insights and experiences will help our clients and our lawyers, recognize and participate in new opportunities. We’re delighted to embark on this new relationship.”

Mr. McNeil’s appointment is effective June 14, 2021.  “I’m thrilled to join Cox & Palmer,” said Mr. McNeil. “Cox & Palmer is an ambitious and dynamic firm and I look forward to helping the firm and its clients achieve even greater success.”

“We’re delighted to welcome Stephen McNeil as a new colleague,” said Danny Gallivan, Chair of Cox & Palmer’s Regional Board. “Our former premier has led Nova Scotia through some of its most challenging times. He has served our province honourably and with distinction and Nova Scotians are better off because of his service.”

During his time in office he achieved five consecutive balanced budgets and led the province through 2020, one of its most difficult years ever with the Portapique mass casualties, COVID-19 and tragedies at sea and in the air. Nova Scotia exported more products than ever and the population grew younger as more Nova Scotians “came home” and as more immigrants chose Nova Scotia.  His government introduced new programs like pre-primary, North America’s first presumed consent for organ donation and he took steps to end the decades-long pollution of Boat Harbour.

In his new role, Mr. McNeil will provide strategic guidance for the firm and its clients. His national and international experience will help Cox & Palmer’s clients identify new opportunities for growth. Cox & Palmer is a full-service law firm with offices in the major business centres across Atlantic Canada.
